Too Late! :-[ by David Sebben on Flickr.

This makeshift note attached to the fence at the old Lincoln Elementary School in Rock Island,Illinois says it all.

The 119 year old school has met the wrecking ball after many years of the city trying to sell it. The asking price was less than $60,000, but would have needed several million to bring it to code for any type of business to occupy it.

Still, it holds a lot of sentimental value to former students and the community. To see it meet its demise like this, is a shame. It wasn’t hurting anyone. It was fenced off and boarded up.

But, in the United States and particularly in this area, we like to tear down old, perfectly sound structures and build new ones that last only half as long as this grand old lady.

Shame on us.
