The demise of hydraulic gold mining also doomed the towns whose people depended on it for a living. North Bloomfield, California (colorfully called “Humbug” until 1857) was one of those. The buildings of North Bloomfield, including this schoolhouse, are preserved by the California state parks system within the Malakoff Diggins site.
